Gaetano Lapis
(Cagli bei Urbino 1706 – 1776 Rome)
Diana and Endymion, oil on canvas, 81 x 69 cm, framed
We are grateful to Professor Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome, and Dr. Edgar Peters Bowron, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, for endorsing the attribution of the present painting
As an exceptionally gifted artist born into a family of artisans, Lapis was sent to Rome around 1720, where he entered the workshop of Cristofero Creo, a painter little known today. Lapis’s talent soon attracted the attention of Sebastiano Conca, then the leading artist in Rome. Conca engaged both Lapis and his cousin, Giovanni Conca, to work for him. Lapis’s meticulous compositions, careful studies of the human physiognomy, and smooth painting style earned him the name ‘Il Carraccetto’. The artist’s elegant classicism, which also manifests itself in the present painting, must indeed have recall the work of Annibale Carracci.
